It wasn't a defensive masterpiece but the 麻豆社国产Eagles midget rep hockey team will take it.
The Eagles opened their home regular season schedule with a 7-6 win over the Semiahmoo Ravens on Sunday (Nov. 18) and head coach Tony Mahood was relieved his team held on for the victory.
"It's always nice to get a win," he said, noting that the Eagles lost their season opener 6-2 in Burnaby on Friday (Nov. 16). "We've had a bit of a tough start to the year and have been short guys for a few of our earlier games."
Sunday's game saw the Ravens open the scoring just over four minutes into the opening period but Squamish's Mason Moberg tied the game two minutes later. Daniel Munn and Dan Lowe scored minutes apart to give 麻豆社国产a 3-1 lead but Semiahmoo replied with a shorthanded goal soon after. Ryan Milia added a late goal to give 麻豆社国产the 4-2 edge after the first period.
The Ravens came out flying early in the second period, tying the game up at four, but Isshin Chiyasu scored with 33 seconds left in the second frame to give 麻豆社国产the lead back.
Semiahmoo re-took the lead early in third, scoring two quick goals, but Tak Gray scored a power play equalizer to knot the game at six. Then, with three minutes to go, Montana Deschenes scored the game winner and the Eagles held on for the 7-6 win. Top scorers for the team were Munn and Chiyasu, with three points apiece.
Mahood said his team still needs to work out a few kinks in its game.
"We need to work on our defensive play," he said. "We left a few guys wide open today and a lot of it is just basic defensive zone coverage."
The Eagles will be back on the ice at Brennan Park next Sunday (Nov. 25) starting at their regular time of 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the 麻豆社国产Cougars juvenile team picked up a forfeit win on Monday (Nov. 19) after an unusual set of circumstances.
According to Cougars player Nick Lowe, the game was a see-saw battle and a line brawl ensued after a rough third period. Aldergrove, who was leading 6-5 at the time of the brawl, left the game without saying anything and ended up forfeiting.
The Cougars play home games Mondays starting at 9 p.m.
