First ninja competition a success for new Â鶹Éç¹ú²úgym

More than 75 compete in Canadian Ninja League Ninja Warrior competition held last weekend

Squamish's first Ninja Warrior competition held this weekend was a ton of work, but went off without a hitch, according to Â鶹Éç¹ú²úNinja Gym owner, Gary McFarlane.

There were 75 kids competing at the gym in the six to 13-year-old categories on Saturday. Sunday was for the bigger kids, including the 40 and over category.

Most of the competitors, who maneuvered through obstacles designed to test their endurance, speed, and strength, were from outside of Squamish, McFarlane said, and they schooled the locals on what can be done with lots of training.

Though some came close, none of the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úyouth involved made the podium.

"The Â鶹Éç¹ú²úkids got their eyes opened by the level of ninja skill that is out there," he said. "They have been training for a while at their gyms and we just opened up."

Squamish's gym is the first dedicated Ninja Warrior Gym in Western Canada, according to McFarlane, and is based on the American Ninja Warrior, U.S. sports entertainment competition.

McFarlane said there are sure to be more competitions in the future, though no dates have been set.

"Everyone had a great time," he said.

"We’re going to take the lessons we learned this weekend and up our training. The next step is to form a competition team and get Â鶹Éç¹ú²úkids stronger and develop more Ninja Warrior skills."
