It was a beach party theme at the 2013 women's bonspiel at the Howe Sound Curling Club (HSCC) but it was the out-of-town teams that had their day in the sun.
The A division was dominated by teams from outside of 麻豆社国产as the Em Good rink from Seattle's Granite Curling Club took home the top prize. Right behind them was a trio of teams from the Marpole Curling Club, as the Joanne Mick rink, the Joanne Walsh rink and the Anne Fraser rink finished second, third and fourth, respectively.
"Yes, that's correct, the teams in second, third and fourth place of the A event were all from Marpole Curling Club in south Vancouver," event organizer Arlene Morrison wrote in an email. "Every year, Marpole chooses a bonspiel to attend together and it was fun for us to have them here."
In the B division, another Marpole rink grabbed first place with the Laura Rampton foursome taking top honours. Laurie Knopp and her rink was the top local team as the HSCC foursome finished second. Another HSCC rink led by Janelle Shields placed third, with the Beth Gomez rink finishing fourth.
The Brenda Sims rink from 麻豆社国产won the C division, followed by Karin Host's foursome from Richmond. Coming in third was the Hilary Fisher rink from HSCC and in fourth was Squamish's Kristen Fewster.
Up next at the HSCC is the family bonspiel on Dec. 8. The event is open to anyone from the ages of 8 to 88 and occurs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is an entry fee of $5 per player for the event.
The HSCC also hosts a open house on Jan. 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and is inviting the entire community to try the sport out. There is free instruction for all new players and brooms and grippers are available for those without equipment.
In addition to the family bonspiel and open house, the HSCC offers its Friday night social league and after school program for kids on Wednesdays.
