Quest golf tournament returns

Second annual event to help raise funds for student athletes planned for Sept. 18

After a successful inaugural year in 2009, Quest University's golf tournament is back.

The tournament, which helps raise funds to support student athletes at the school, will see a maximum of 36 groups of four hit the links at the 麻豆社国产Valley Golf Club.

Sean Shook, the assistant athletic director and men's basketball coach, said last year's event helped raise over $7,000 to help improve the school's weight room and he hopes this year will net similar results.

"This event gives us an opportunity to help raise money to create a better atmosphere for our athletes," he said. "We're trying to find ways to become self-sustaining as an athletic department and this can help us in that regard."

Shook also noted that the department is thinking of adding new teams and new equipment and the tournament should help them move forward with those plans.

Quest athletes are highly involved in the tournament, usually volunteering as guides or hosts for the participants. Athletes will take the day off from practice and help out - some even plan to take part in the tournament itself.

The event will feature the full 18 holes of golf as well as a number of activities at each green.

Shook said one of the popular activities from last year, the opportunity for golfers to try to outdrive a Quest athlete for $1, would be repeated.

If successful, the competitor can win a small prize such as a sleeve of golf balls.

Other activities include a long drive competition and a closest to the pin contest.

According to Shook, the tournament will be quite similar to last year's, joking that he hopes the weather is as nice as last year.

It will be played in scramble style with all groups starting on a different hole.

The tournament is open to any individual for $125 or a foursome for $450 and includes both the green fees and the dinner.

Walk-ups are also available and registration begins at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Tee-off is planned for 1 p.m. and it will be followed by a steak dinner and awards presentation at the Quest University campus.

Shook said the dinner is a great opportunity for the event's participants to get more familiar with the university's campus and to mingle with both the Quest athletes and fellow golfers.
