The Quest University Kermodes women's soccer team will be in control of its own playoff destiny after winning one of two on the road this past weekend.
Quest travelled to Kamloops on Saturday (Oct. 13) to take on the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack, in what could be a potential first-round playoff matchup. The two teams were deadlocked in a scoreless draw for most of the game, but in the 80th minute, Pemberton native Krigi Marti scored the go-ahead goal and the Kermodes hung on for the 1-0 win.
It was only the second loss of the year for TRU, who sit atop the Pacwest standings. The Kermodes continued their road trip on Sunday (Oct. 14) and took on the UBC-O Heat. The Heat scored early on a penalty kick, but Brianna Powrie tied the game up at the 38-minute mark and the teams ended the first half 1-1. The second half was all UBC-O, as they added goals in the 59th and 72nd minutes to earn the 3-1 win.
Despite the loss, the Kermodes have a strong chance to qualify for the playoffs later this month. They sit in fourth place in the Pacwest standings with a record of five wins, five losses and two ties. Quest will return home for the final two games of the season and as long as they maintain their fourth-place position, they will head to the postseason.
The postseason has long been out of the discussion for the men's team, as the squad's winless streak reached 12 games and they remain the only team in the Pacwest without a victory.
Saturday saw TRU blank the Kermodes 3-0 and Quest put up more of a fight on Sunday against UBC-O but lost 3-2. Scoring goals for Quest were Taylor Cooper and Benjamin Schager, while the Heat's Austin Jones notched a hat trick to help his team win.
The men's team record stands at zero wins, 10 losses and two draws. Dating back to last year, Quest has only won once in its past 21 games.
Both teams will return to Quest University for games on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 20 and 21). The teams will take on Douglas College on Saturday, with the women kicking off at noon and the men at 2 p.m. Sunday will see the Kwantlen Eagles come to town, game time is 1 p.m. for the women and 3 p.m. for the men.
