Sikh Temple finally got rid of that annoying goose egg in the "W" column.
Last year's second-place team during regular season action in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League (HSMSL) went three games without a win to kick off the season but managed to get over the hump on Sunday (Oct. 7) by defeating Zephyr 9-1.
"We finally got one," said a relieved Adam Bir after the victory. "We really needed this win."
Bir said his squad finally moved the ball around and is slowly starting to develop some team chemistry after adding several new players.
"It's slowly coming together again for us," he said. "We picked up a lot of new guys this year and it's taking a bit of time for us to come together as a team."
He pointed out that the team has also added Joga Sangha as its new head coach and Sangha worked the team out hard at practice before the game on Sunday. Temple moved into fourth place with a record of one win, two losses and one tie. Zephyr is now the league's only winless team with a record of zero wins and four losses.
The championship rematch between Galileo and B&B Excavating will have to wait another week as the game was postponed by mutual agreement and will be replayed at a later date to be determined by league officials.
The late game saw the Ellis Moving Eagles strengthen their third-place position in the league with a 2-1 win over Automind. Austin Aldridge and Nathan Ward tallied for the Eagles, with Donovan Pereira scoring the lone goal for Automind.
The Eagles improved to three wins and one loss, while Automind slipped to one win and three losses, good for fifth place overall.
HSMSL action continues on Sunday (Oct. 14), with Sikh Temple battling Automind, B&B Excavating taking on Zephyr and the Ellis Moving Eagles challenging Lilwat in the afternoon game.
