Sounders gear up for season

High school football team looking for players, volunteers

Howe Sound Sounders football players have their first training sessions under their belts, but the team is still looking for young athletes to fill out the roster as well as volunteers.

The team has had four practices starting Monday (Aug. 23) with a review of game film, followed by three hands-on practices at the Don Ross Secondary School field.

Video footage has become a more important aspect of team preparation thanks to new rules set out by the Tier 2 varsity provincial football division, said head coach Rob Ryan.

"Every team is now going to be responsible and must send an edited video of their last game to the team they play next," he said. "It's been done for a while in AAA football and now it's moved on to us."

Ryan thinks the program should help teams better prepare for opponents.

"It will be a great tool," he said, adding that plays can be broken down by offence, defence, passing and rushing plays. "Anything that can make us more prepared is a good thing."

But the technological skill needed to fulfill the new requirement is posing an immediate challenge, said Ryan. So the Sounders are putting out a call for a volunteer who could take on the video editing duties for the team.

"We just need someone who is computer literate," he said. "Once we figure out how to fully use the DSV [Digital Sports Video] program, it will be great."

The team gets into sports action with two exhibition games Friday, Sept. 10 at Don Ross Secondary 3:15 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 17 in Vancouver.

The six game regular season begins Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. on the Don Ross Secondary field.
