The Howe Sound Sounders football club travelled all the way to Campbell River on Saturday (Oct. 6) to take on the Timberline Timberwolves, but ended up with a result similar to that of the previous week, losing 42-6.
Missing quarterback Rolan Mendoza due to injury, the Sounders struggled on offence, with zero yards passing and 105 yards of total offence. Defensively, the team was stronger than the previous week against Frank Hurt, but still surrendered 241 yards.
"It was not as bad defensively as last game although the score isn't much different," Sounders coach Jim Errington wrote in an email. "Because of turnovers, we rarely got out of our own 30. We only earned three first downs and it was physical game, as both teams had a number of players go down."
Turnovers killed any offensive momentum Howe Sound could string together, as the offence threw two interceptions and fumbled the ball away four times. The lone Sounders touchdown was scored by Cam Dare, who returned a kickoff 92 yards for the major. Dare led the way in rushing yards with 57, with Mitch Alford picking up 21. Josh Watts led the Sounders in tackles with eight, while Kevin Gloor and Alford also picked up quarterback sacks. Rick Wilson had the Sounders' only positive turnover, grabbing an interception.
The loss dropped Howe Sound's record to one win and two losses on the year but Errington told The Chief that the Sounders' opponent for next week, Isfeld, was forced to concede the game due to injuries. Therefore, the next time the Sounders will be in action will be Oct. 20 when they take on E.J. Milne in Victoria. The next home game for the team will be an exhibition game against Pemberton on Oct. 27.
