The Howe Sound Sounders golf team used a little home-course advantage to climb into sixth place at the B.C. High School Championships tournament at the 麻豆社国产Valley Golf Course (SVGC) that concluded on May 28.
Howe Sound played consistent golf on May 27 and 28, shooting a total score of 311 and then 310 to jump from eighth to sixth in the 20-team field.
鈥淸They] started the last round in eights and worked their way up to sixth,鈥 head coach Darryl Simmons wrote in an email. 鈥淭he boys seemed pretty happy with their performance as a team even though some wanted to shoot better individually.鈥
Sounders team members Ollie Rizun and Isshin Chiyasu tied for the lowest individual scores, with both players shooting a total of eight over par for the 36 holes. The pair shot identical 77s and 75s on May 27 and 28, respectively. Kevin Kerr of the Sounders placed 40th individually T 16 over par (78, 82) and Yamoto Chiyasu finished 56th and shot 21 over (86, 79).
SVGC general manager Brian Avey said the foursome represented 麻豆社国产well.
鈥淚鈥檓 really happy with our boys,鈥 he said, noting that the Sounders were only three strokes out of fourth place. 鈥淚鈥檓 glad they grinded it out to finish sixth and that all guys shot in the 70s at least once. It鈥檚 very good for them. They made a nice turnaround and even beat Rockridge, who had won the North Shore division during the regular season.鈥
Avey said the course was well received by the players attending the tournament and that everyone enjoyed the skills competition on May 26. Players got to compete in the longest yard, chipping and putting contests for fun. Chiyasu won the chipping contest.
Vancouver鈥檚 Prince of Wales Secondary took home the top prize handily by shooting a total of one-over-par over the two days. They beat out second place Steveston-London from Richmond by 20 strokes. Prince of Wales was led by Jordan Lu, who shot an incredible -14 (63, 67) over the two days.
Lu broke Nick Taylor鈥檚 high school record with the 63 on May 27 and Avey said he was amazed at the skill of some of the high schoolers.
鈥淚鈥檝e had a lot of events here and those scores are outstanding,鈥 he said. 鈥淎 lot of these guys are going to be playing in the NCAA next year. They鈥檙e our future and it was just a talented pool of kids.鈥
The high schoolers played from the blue markers, not the blacks the men play and Avey said the club doesn鈥檛 keep track of scores from there. But he pointed out that at the most recent CN Women鈥檚 Tour event, the lowest score from the blues, was a 66.
