Uunila survives Alcatraz

It wasn鈥檛 quite a jail-break scenario but Squamish鈥檚 Linnea Uunila braved the waters of San Francisco Bay and managed to win her age group at the Alcatraz Sharkfest swim on Saturday (June 7).

Uunila completed the 2.4-kilometre swim in 51 minutes, six seconds. The course sees participants start off just off of Alcatraz Island and swim through the bay to the shore San Francisco shore.听

The race, celebrating its 23rd year, is regarded as a difficult swim and not recommended for novices. Water temperature for the race generally ranges from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius.

The 11-year-old 麻豆社国产resident placed first in the 11 to 12 female age division and also posted a better time than females in the 13 and 14 age group. She placed 268th overall racing against all ages against a total of 683 participants.

The Uunila family thanked SwimFaster鈥檚 Kelly Kaye, Peter Scott of Sea Hiker and J.F. Plouffe from Challenge By Choice for their help in getting Linnea ready for Alcatraz.
