Kasper Woolley continued his strong rookie year in K1 alpine skiing competition, finishing third overall on the weekend at the K1 Westerns at Silver Star Mountain Resort.
The 麻豆社国产youth placed fifth on Friday (Feb. 18) in the giant slalom, blazing though the course in an even 50 seconds. He followed that with a third-place finish in the slalom on Saturday (Feb. 19), putting together a time of 36.28 seconds. He then capped the weekend with a second-place finish in the kombi, finishing two-thirds of a second behind first-place racer Simon Bernard of Fernie.
His Whistler Mountain Ski Club (WSMC) teammate Laura Swaffield fared even better. Swaffield won her kombi competition as well as a giant slalom. She also placed second and fourth in two other Slalom races, en route to being name the overall ladies winner for the event.
"I was really thrilled," she said."My coaches kept telling me to focus on my skiing instead of the results and I think that is how the results came."
According to WSMC head coach Raul Anguita, the kombi race, which features slalom gates, banked turns and small jumps, was a challenging but fun course for his team.
"The Vernon Ski Club set the bar high, defining what a kombi event is all about," he said. "Congratulations to them and to Silver Star."
The event saw the top skiers from British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan take part and there was some provincial pride involved. Results were tallied and B.C. came out on top in the provincial standings.
However, the camaraderie among the B.C. competitors will likely be short-lived as they will go head to head against each other again at the provincial championships March 18 to 20 at Mount Washington. It will see the top skiers battle it out for a chance to move on to the nationals.
