Letter: Regarding the editorial ‘Why don’t we tip all service workers?’

Thank you for standing up for service workers!

I love working in service. We get to make people smile and that is special.

There is a lot we do that goes unseen and unappreciated.

I’ve heard many people say, “Why would I tip someone for doing their job?”

Well, because our jobs are 10Xs more complicated and 10Xs more tiring when we have to serve 100 people an hour versus 10 people.

If you are one of the remaining service workers in Squamish, you are probably providing the service of two or more workers, but you only get paid as one.

Whether it is working extra shifts or moving faster to accommodate the large volumes of customers, you are likely doing more than your job description entails. Businesses are eager to welcome back as many customers as they can.

The customer must be served.

The customer must be satisfied.

Service has always involved hard work, which is not new. The problem that we face today is that it is becoming increasingly harder to carry out the work — to deliver the quality of service that meets our own satisfaction as workers.

We are tired.

Cost of living is rising faster than our pay.

The least you could do as a customer is demonstrate that you value our service, because you will miss us when we are all gone.

When there is no one to help you check out your groceries, steam your milk, answer your questions, or direct you to the right product for your specific needs. When there is no one left to help you, you will miss us, so please value us while we are still here!

I believe most people are simply clueless.

I don’t think the non-tippers have bad hearts, but they often look like someone who has never had to count their nickels.

TIPS

To ensure proper service

To improve people’s smiles

To ensure people stay
