Savary Island residents, including Todd Habekost of Savary Island Real Estate, had a pleasant surprise this morning as hundreds of thousands of Pacific herring swirled in the waters off Sutherland Beach, turning the waters a milky turquoise colour.
At the same time Habekost was taking a video of the herring, a plethora of eagles flew above the waters vying for a tasty snack of herring for breakfast.
The herring spawn happens every spring on eastern Vancouver Island and in the qathet region. Adult Pacific herring congregate in huge numbers along the shallow, coastal shorelines.
Thousands of sea lions, whales and birds can be seen at this time of year feeding on the large schools of herring. Bears and other land mammals also eat the herring eggs on shorelines.
