Coquitlam hosting Team B.C. lacrosse tryouts for North American Indigenous Games

There are three teams set to represent the province at one of the biggest sports events on the continent in 2023.
Coquitlam Poirier Forum
The Poirier Forum in Coquitlam, typically used for gym sports and pickleball, will be transformed into a mass vaccination clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic to get shots into people's arms.

The North American Indigenous Games are one of the most celebrated multi-sport tournaments in the world.

Held every three years, it'll be making, what will soon be, a long-awaited return to Canada in 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020 edition.

Young Tri-Cities lacrosse players of Indigenous heritage looking to play on the international stage are being invited to try-out for three B.C. teams that'll make the trip to Halifax, N.S., next year.

I-SPARC (Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council) is the organizing body for First Nations-based provincial teams.

Box lacrosse is one of 13 sports that's set to send Team B.C. rosters to the Games.

At Toronto 2017, the last completed North American Indigenous Games, B.C. lacrosse players brought back two medals — both bronze in the under-19 men's and women's categories.

Three selection camps are on the docket and are set to take place at the Poirier Forum () over the final weekend of August.

The try-out schedule is as follows:

  • 16U Male
    • Born 2004 to 2006
    • Aug. 27 = 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • 19U Female
    • Born 2004 or later
    • Aug. 27 = 12 to 4 p.m.
  • 19U Male

    • Aug. 28 = 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pre-registration is required, I-SPARC explains, and interested players must sign up for their respective try-out before midnight on Aug. 25.
