Port Coquitlam couple running African safe haven calls for cash

Can you help? Abetavu, a village outside of Kampala, Uganda, is in need of family care packages and foam mattresses.

A Port Coquitlam couple that founded and runs a village in Africa is calling for help to buy family care packages and foam mattresses.

Robert Birungi and Carli Travers, who started the safe haven of Abetavu near Kampala, Uganda, more than a decade ago, are reaching out as part of their annual holiday push to support hundreds of young people.

Specifically, the pair is in need of funds to cover care packages for 200 of the 350 children on the campus — at $10 per child — plus money to buy 20 more foam mattresses, at $35 each, for those in need.

Donations to their charity, Classrooms for Africa, can be made via the through Canada Helps.

Travers, a graduate of BC Christian Academy in PoCo and Douglas College in Coquitlam, said Birungi is currently at Abetavu where he celebrated Christmas with the community.

And during his stay, he plans to boost the gardening and soccer programs and children’s ministry, as well as undertake home restorations for the sponsored families.

The cost to sponsor a family with food, medical supplies and education is $20 a month or $240 for a year; tax receipts are provided.
