MALIBU, Calif. (AP) 鈥 Eileen Ryan, an actor who appeared on TV, in films and on Broadway and the matriarch of the steeped-in-the-arts Penn family, has died. She was 94.
Ryan, who was the mother of actors Sean Penn and Christopher Penn and musician Michael Penn, died at her home in Malibu, California, on Sunday, according to family spokesperson Mara Buxbaum. Ryan would have turned 95 next Sunday.
鈥淲e lost mom yesterday,鈥 Michael Penn tweeted with a broken heart emoji.
She had two roles on Broadway in the 1950s 鈥 both short-lived 鈥 in 鈥淪ing Till Tomorrow鈥 in 1953 and 鈥淐omes a Day鈥 in 1958.
In 1957, Ryan was at rehearsals for 鈥淚ceman Cometh鈥 when she met Leo Penn, who had taken over for Jason Robards at the Circle in the Square production. They moved in together within a week of meeting and married a few months later. Leo Penn died in 1998.
Her TV credits include appearances on 鈥淧rivate Practice,鈥 鈥淭he Twilight Zone,鈥 鈥淏onanza,鈥 鈥淭he Detectives,鈥 鈥淢arcus Welby, M.D.,鈥 鈥淟ittle House on the Prairie,鈥 鈥淎rli$$,鈥 鈥淎lly McBeal,鈥 鈥淣YPD Blue,鈥 鈥淓R,鈥 鈥淐SI,鈥 鈥淢en of a Certain Age鈥 and 鈥淕rey鈥檚 Anatomy.鈥
Her film roles included 鈥淧arenthood,鈥 and 鈥淏enny & Joon.鈥 She also acted in films with her sons, including 鈥淎t Close Range,鈥 鈥淚 Am Sam,鈥 鈥淭he Indian Runner鈥 and 鈥淭he Crossing Guard.鈥
