A Vancouver man is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2022 death of his brother.
Alexander Tyson Trimble, 28, was originally charged with both second-degree murder and manslaughter in the June 5, 2022 death of Zachary Trimble.
Details of the case are currently covered by a publication ban.
However, what happened could soon be known with lawyers now setting a date for sentencing, Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Kathryn Denhoff heard Jan. 5.
Trimble made his first court appearance on the date of his brother’s death and has had family show up for court appearances in support. No family was in court Jan. 5.
Trimble had initially pleaded not guilty and a preliminary hearing took place June 23.
Such hearings are done to determine if enough evidence exists to go to trial.
However, 18 days before that, court documents show, the court information had been amended with Trimble being charged with manslaughter alone.
Sentencing was set for Jan. 5 but Crown prosecutor Phil Sebellin and defence lawyer Kevin Westell told Denhoff some reports needed for that process remain incomplete. That includes a Gladue report used in sentencings for Indigenous offenders.
The case returns to court Jan. 10 to confirm the sentencing date.
Trimble was arrested June 5 , 2022 after Vancouver police responded to reports of an assault at a home near Bruce Street and East 49th Avenue.
The call came in shortly before 3 a.m.
Once on scene, police discovered a 23-year-old man badly injured outside the house. He later died from his injuries.
