A B.C. man who pleaded guilty to assaulting a Vancouver health-care worker has been sentenced to time served and a year’s probation.
Vancouver Provincial Court Judge Gregory Rideout heard Tuesday that Dylan Foster Williams Jackson, 33, had been struck by a car on June 5, 2023 and was taken to Vancouver General Hospital with a broken leg and hip and other injuries.
“At the time, he was in a great deal of pain,” defence lawyer Jayde Niefer told Rideout July 16.
Crown prosecutor Heather Burley told Rideout that Jackson began yelling obscenities as a male emergency room health worker tried to administer an intravenous device for treatment. The worker stopped but soon returned to try again.
Burley said Jackson then struck the worker without warning, striking his cheekbone.
“This is a person trying to help you at a hospital,” Rideout said to Jackson. “You weren’t in a good space when this was taking place, were you?”
“Yes, your honour,” Jackson said.
Jackson has spent 41 days in custody.
Jackson leaned against the wall in the prisoner’s dock after limping in for his case to be heard. He said his wheelchair remained downstairs in the cells area as it could not be brought up.
