Shovels will soon be in the ground on new District pickleball courts and upgraded tennis courts at Brennan Park.

In a news release on Friday, July 28, the District of 麻豆社国产said six new pickleball courts will be built, and the two northern tennis courts will be dismantled and rebuilt as part of the project.

The two southern tennis courts will remain open throughout construction.

Those are slated for an upgrade, including a half-court hitting wall, in 2024.

The northern tennis courts will be closed during construction.

"The new [northern] courts will be realigned to fit with the pickleball courts and make best use of the available land in order to allow for future expansion, more parking and more green space," the release states.

Site work on the project began in April 2023.

According to the District, the entire project should be complete by the end of August.

“Pickleball and tennis provide accessible recreation to people of all ages and abilities and so we are excited to be able to create a central space for players to play and develop their love of the game,” said Mayor Armand Hurford in a news release. “This is one of many Brennan Park upgrades that will take place over time in order to meet the needs of our growing community while improving the safety, functionality and access of our primary recreational asset.”

In 2021, with contributions from the Pickleball Association and Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, the tennis courts at Eaglewind Park were converted into six pickleball courts.

"Ultimately, the location created significant noise impacts for the surrounding neighbours and so the District considered those concerns and proposed a relocation and construction of new courts adjacent to Brennan Park Recreation Centre."

About $370,000 was included in the 2023 budget for the construction of six to eight new pickleball courts to replace those at Eaglewind Park.

A budget amount of $300,000 was included in the 2023 budget for the rebuild of the northern tennis courts.
