Crawl through culture in August

Â鶹Éç¹ú²úone of 70 communities on annual BC Cultural Crawl

Â鶹Éç¹ú²úmay have the words Recreation Capital of Canada written on a sign welcoming visitors to town, but it could just as well say Cultural Capital of Canada for all the musicians, artists and artisans that call the area home.

During the entire month of August, Â鶹Éç¹ú²úshows off that vibrant and unique arts and culture scene with a series of gallery showings, festivals, demos, workshops and more as one of 70 communities on the ninth annual BC Cultural Crawl.

"This is an event that's been created by an organization that puts out a guide listing arts and culture venues and activities," said Krisztina Egyed, Chair of the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úArts Council. "The BC Cultural Crawl is an online program featuring self-guided arts and culture tours through the whole province."

For the month-long cultural crawl, Squamish's itinerary is full of various events, art shows and special presentations for culture connoisseurs.

Egyed said one month was not enough to showcase all that Â鶹Éç¹ú²úhad to offer.

"It's unfortunate it just focuses on the month of August, because there is always unbelievable things happening in Squamish," she said. "It's year-round."

That's why, despite the August dates, some of Squamish's BC Cultural Crawl events including Logger's Sports (July 29 to Aug. 1) and Live @ Â鶹Éç¹ú²ú(Sept. 4 and 5), among others.

One new event is a special, first-time collaboration between the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úArts Council and Logger Sports.

"We are for the first time collaborating with Â鶹Éç¹ú²úDays Logger Sports to create a gallery exhibit called Into the Woods," she said.

"There will be an opening reception for the exhibit at the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úArts Council building on Cleveland on July 29 from 7 to 9 p.m."

In addition, the SAC building is now open on Saturdays.

"We'll be hosting various demos, workshops and exhibits," she said. "Plus there are new galleries and many new artist studios that are part of the crawl as well."

In fact, there are so many artists and artisans in Â鶹Éç¹ú²úit has been credited with having the second highest artistic population in a community of less than 50,000 in all Canada, according to Egyed.

"I think people primarily find the setting here inspirational," she said. "People come here and their imaginations run wild. It's that dramatic scenery coupled with a great sense of community that draws so many people with an artistic slant."

Egyed said the BC Cultural Crawl was a perfect way to experience the arts and culture scene of any one of the 70 communities.

"It's a great snapshot of what goes on in each community," she said.
