ICBC reports an average of more than 1,900 crashes every year in B.C. over the holiday period. Work-related injuries from driving also increase in December.

If you’ve been out on the roads already today, then you know that the winter weather can make driving risky in the Sea to Sky Corridor.

Additionally, as the holidays get closer, it is important to recognize the risks involved during that busy time.

According to a news release from Road Safety at Work, ICBC reports an average of more than 1,900 crashes every year in B.C. over the holiday period. Work-related injuries from driving also increase in December.

As such, the campaign offers these tips:

  • Don’t drive if it is not essential
  • Know the conditions and plan your route
  • Use four matched winter tires
  • Ensure your car is prepared with washer fluid and good wiper blades
  • Leave at least four seconds of space between you and the car ahead
  • Use caution around plows and salt and sand trucks and never pass them on the right

“Driving in winter conditions is a risk every time you get behind the wheel, all along the Sea to Sky corridor,” said Shift into Winter campaign spokesperson, Trace Acres, in the release.

“Most crashes are preventable if we install good winter tires, adjust driving for the conditions, pay attention and avoid distractions, and avoid driving when conditions are treacherous.”

The Minister of Labour, Harry Bains, remarked that safety takes precedence for workers.

“No matter where your job takes you, safety must always be the top priority. For anyone whose work takes them on the road, safety is especially important during the winter months. Always practice defensive driving, because every worker deserves to go home, healthy and whole, after a shift,” said Bains in the release.
