Healing magic

To most, they're just weeds, pretty flowers or background greenery in the forest, but for herbalist Sarah Orlowski, wild plants offer a plethora of uses, from healing with herbs to food you could survive on in the wild.

To most, they're just weeds, pretty flowers or background greenery in the forest, but for herbalist Sarah Orlowski, wild plants offer a plethora of uses, from healing with herbs to food you could survive on in the wild.

Orlowski is offering a weekend long workshop at her Upper Â鶹Éç¹ú²úValley herb farm July 8 to 10, aimed at teaching students the power of 'Earth Magic, Earth Medicine'.

In addition to master herbalist Orlowski, students at the workshop will learn about the power of plants from Chanchal Cabrera, owner of Gaia Garden in Vancouver, who also served as a consultant to herbal issues for the Ministry of Health from 1997 to 2004. Also, yoga instructor Gaia Morasky will be on hand to share her knowledge of shamanic practices using plants as well as primitive life skills.

"People can spend the weekend camping here on the farm, or some can stay at a local B&B," Orlowski said. "Locals will, of course, be able to just drive home."

The Earth Magic, Earth Medicine workshop runs from 4 p.m. on Friday, July 8 to 4 p.m. on Sunday July 10.

"We will cover a lot of things," said Orlowski. "We will discuss current uses of plants as well as historic uses."

Students attending the workshop will also each choose one specific plant and become intimately acquainted with how to recognize, harvest, process and make medicine from their chosen herb.

In addition to next weekend's workshop, which focuses on leaves, flowers and fruits - Orlowski said she has a second workshop planned for the weekend of Sept. 23 to 25, that will focus on roots and bark.
