The final match of the annual Sea to Sky Squash tournament turned out to be a family feud.

The Men鈥檚 C Division final closed off the three-day tournament on Sunday, Feb. 15 and it featured a clash between father and son, as 62-year-old dad Ken Miller battled his offspring Cody Miller, 29.

A packed group of spectators inside the 麻豆社国产Squash Club (SSC) joked that it was almost like a form of child abuse as Ken swept Cody in straight sets 3-0 to win the C Division, but he said it was a challenging game.

鈥淭he win wasn鈥檛 as gratifying as it should be,鈥 Ken joked. 鈥淎nd I think it may be the last chance I have to do that.鈥

Ken explained that he鈥檚 been a member of the SSC for more than 25 years and said it was the first true competitive game he鈥檚 played against Cody.

鈥淲e鈥檝e never played a tournament match before and I think Steve [Jacobs, tournament organizer] set it up on purpose that we would meet in the finals,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he game went really well, it was cleanly played, but Cody鈥檚 shots weren鈥檛 as tight as I鈥檝e seen before and his drop shots weren鈥檛 as tight as they should be. Maybe he had butterflies, but I think he鈥檒l kill me next year.鈥

鈥淚鈥檒l get him next year,鈥 Cody quipped.

Ken said he鈥檚 been playing squash since he was 20 and he thinks Cody got into the game because of the success of his brother Brett Miller, who placed third in the A division.

鈥淏rett began playing before Cody and I know Cody used to beat him at tennis,鈥 Ken said. 鈥淚 think Cody wanted to get back at Brett a little and he aspires to be at his level. There鈥檚 more of a rivalry between the boys than me and either of them.鈥

The tournament saw a total of 50 players hit the courts and it was Whistler鈥檚 Rob Eberhard who regained his Men鈥檚 A Division title. He last won the title in 2012. Squamish鈥檚 Paul Sutton placed second in the A Division.

Whistler also took top prize in the Women鈥檚 A Division, with Michelle Heraughty placing first and Whistler鈥檚 Dara Sklar finishing second.

Other winners included: Vancouver鈥檚 Graham Gilley (men鈥檚 B), Richmond鈥檚 Berny Schulz (women鈥檚 B), Vancouver鈥檚 Elsa Snyder (women鈥檚 C) and Squamish鈥檚 Aimee Mahnger (women鈥檚 D).

Other locals with strong showings were: Mona Gunn (second, women鈥檚 C) and Lisa Makitalo (second, women鈥檚 D).

The next big event at the SSC is the club championships occurring on March 7. For complete results from the tournament, visit www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/The-Sea-To-Sky-Squash-Tournament.
