Hot On Your Heels women's bike race attracts big numbers

The estrogen level on the trails of Garibaldi Highlands was off the charts on Saturday (July 27).

The second annual Hot On Your Heels women's-only enduro mountain bike race took over, with 112 riders from as far away as Seattle participating.

"It was awesome," said event organizer Melissa Sheridan. "A lot of the ladies are saying this was the race of the season."

Racers zoomed through three laps in the trails near Quest University, with three different timed sections on the course. Male volunteers were located throughout the trails and Sheridan said the 30 men helped motivate the riders.

"With 30 men and 112 women the odds are pretty amazing for the guys," she said, laughing. "Republic Bikes had a bacon station on course and there was also a massage station set up - there were lots of scantily clad men."

Whistler resident Leonie Picton had the fastest checkpoint time of the day at 13:28, with North Vancouver's Amy Pryse-Phillips placing second with a time of 14:15. Genevieve Demers was the top 麻豆社国产female, finishing third.

Sheridan said the event sold out in only 11 days and the buzz on the event is growing. Ridership grew by 38 from 2013 and she said her goal is to get the numbers to 150 for 2014.

She said Hot On Your Heels is more of a social ride, with many women saying they like the more casual atmosphere. It's also more than just a race, as the after-party at the 麻豆社国产Valley Golf and County Club featured fancy dresses, dancing, dinner and live music.

According to Sheridan, there is potential for more local women's races but she noted she has her hands full with Hot On Your Heels and her responsibilities as the Toonie Race director for SORCA.

The event is also a fundraiser for Go Girls Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds, a program run by Big Brothers Big Sisters Canada. Sheridan said the event raised more than $6,000 for the program - four times more than what was raised in 2012.
