It's now down to the final four in the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League (HSMSL).
Moving on will be Automind and Galileo, which defeated the Ellis Moving Eagles and Zephyr, respectively, at Quest University field on Sunday (March 25).
Automind took out the Eagles 5-2 in the early match, but the game was much closer than the score indicated.
"I think we managed to outwork them and near the end we were a bit too much for them," said Automind head coach David Harrison.
Istvan Richter opened the scoring 25 minutes in, converting off a corner kick. Charlie Robinson scored his first of three just before the half to give Automind a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.
The Eagles stormed back in the second half with Kurt Texeira and Phil Dubrulle knotting the game at the 72-minute mark, but the tie was short lived as Robinson got the lead back for his team. He added a late goal and Ronan Dean also tallied for Automind.
"We could have folded at 2-2," Harrison said. "But we pushed forward and got some timely saves from Sam [Dunkley] in goal."
Automind will take on Khalsa on Sunday (April 1) and Harrison said he wants the team to continue doing what it did against the Eagles.
"You don't score many goals sitting back on defence," he said. "We've got some fast guys and we need to use them. Against Khalsa we need to strengthen our midfield because they've got a really strong midfield."
For the Eagles, it was the end to a disappointing season. The 2010 champions never found their groove, only winning three games all season and head coach Dan Ellis hopes to bounce back next season.
"It was a very close game today and we had a couple chances to win, but their goalie played really well," he said. "I wish I could put my finger on what went wrong this year. We had a lot of injuries and guys were away for holidays during the regular season. We started with 20-plus guys on the team and at the end we were struggling to get 11. We just couldn't get on track all season long."
In the late game, Galileo blanked Zephyr 4-0. Kyle Smith scored a pair of goals in the win, with Robbie Nahanee and Kevin Schellenberg adding singles. Galileo will next take on Sikh Temple, with the winner advancing to the HSMSL finals.
The Automind vs. Khalsa game will kick off Sunday at 10 a.m., with Galileo/Temple getting it on at noon. Both games take place at Brennan Park.
