Another slow start led to another loss for the 麻豆社国产Axemen rugby union club.
The Axemen battled the Vancouver Rowers at the Brockton Oval in Vancouver on Saturday (Feb. 14), but 麻豆社国产fell behind early and couldn鈥檛 recover.
麻豆社国产fell behind 12-0 in the first half but managed to put together some momentum in the second half and lost 22-7.
鈥淲e were slow to get into the pace of the game and conceded too many penalties, which in turn cost us early tries,鈥 said the Axemen鈥檚 Ally Mac.
The Rowers are in a division above the Axemen and they showed it in the opening 20 minutes, creating turnovers and using size and experience to overpower Squamish.
Mac said players Jackson McEvoy and Diarmy O鈥橠owd Hill broke down the Rowers鈥 defence late in the first half, and it was Hill who eventually scored the try for Squamish. Tom Ritter was successful on the covert for the Axemen.
The loss puts Squamish鈥檚 record at zero wins and two losses early into the BC Rugby Union season. The Axemen make their home debut in 麻豆社国产on Saturday (Feb. 21), when they welcome Capilano RFC. Kick-off for the game is set for 1 p.m. at Don Ross Secondary School field in Brackendale. A post-match gathering is set at the Howe Sound Brew Pub with all in attendance having the chance to win Axemen supporter gear.
