Ball hockey coming to Squamish

Brand new league eyeing an April-to-August season

If Nick Lowe has his way, gyms in 麻豆社国产will be filled with ball hockey fanatics in 2013.

The Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) grad helped put together the 麻豆社国产Cougars Junior C hockey club earlier this year and is now hoping to create a ball hockey league in town.

"Me and a couple of buddies play in Burnaby and we were going to do it again this summer," he said. "But we didn't really want to travel and went on the B.C. Ball Hockey website and saw that there's leagues all over - so why can't we have one here?"

Lowe said ball hockey is an affordable option for hockey fans who may not be able to afford all of the extra costs that come with playing the game on ice. He said interest in the new league seems high locally.

"People seem to be interested in playing," he said, noting that the proposed league would run from April to August. "A lot of the people I've talked to think it's a good idea and they want to join."

Details still need to be worked out but Lowe said leagues are usually divided by age, with 12-and-under, 15-and-under and 16-plus usually being the breakdown. Games are played five on five with a goalie and a liquid-filled ball is used instead of a puck. Recommended equipment for the sport includes gloves, soccer shin pads and, of course, a jock. Fibreglass or street hockey sticks with plastic blades are also used.

Lowe said he'd like to see the league open to all ages and genders and said he envisions a 20-game season, along with playoffs. He said he's still scouting out potential venues to hold the league, with Brennan Park, as well as the HSSS and Don Ross school gyms as other possibilities.
