After a stellar season in their league, Squamish’s bantam rep Eagles are off to a strong start in the playoff rounds.
On Monday, the team held off a last-minute comeback attempt by the visiting Ridge Meadows Rustlers to jump to a lead in the best-of-three series. The game started slowly, with no goals through the first period, though Â鶹Éç¹ú²úput plenty of pressure on the visitors’ net.Ìý
Ridge Meadows struck first in the second period after an odd bounce off the end boards resulted in a clear shot on goal for the Rustlers. Â鶹Éç¹ú²úfought back though and scored two goals in the period and two more in the third.
With 1:20 left in the game, as the Ridge Meadows goalie was skating to the bench for the extra attacker, the Rustlers managed to get a long shot through traffic that found the back of the net. With 15 seconds left, they added another following a scramble in front of the goal, but that was as close as the visitors got.
Captain Devon Bailey led the offence with two goals for Squamish.
Â鶹Éç¹ú²úqualified for the series after beating Abbotsford 4-2 at home on Feb. 9. Bailey scored twice, while Jeremy Smith and Liam Hudson each added markers.
