Bartow takes Logger of the Day

Hintz wins tree falling with slow and steady cut that hits mark
A competitor in the open chokerman鈥檚 race during the 麻豆社国产Loggers Day Loggers Sports event on Sunday.

Oregon鈥檚 Bryan Bartow is no stranger to 麻豆社国产Days Logger Sports.

While he had found success in particular events in the past, he鈥檇 not won Logger of the Day before 鈥 until Sunday.

When he heard the news he celebrated in understated fashion, needing to be coaxed into giving a fist pump.

If anything, he did not expect to be in the winning position at the end of the day, at least when compared with his performance from 2015. Last year, it was Mitch Hewitt from Scotch Creek, B.C., who took home the top honour.

鈥淚 think last year I did better,鈥 Bartow said.

Kevin Steward was picked as a Sportsman of the Day on Sunday. On Saturday during the novice and intermediate competition, the novice Logger of the Day was Mark Bouquin; intermediate Logger of the Day was Allan Carson; and sportsperson of the day was Katherine Spencer.

One of the more remarkable performances came in the final individual event of the day when slow and steady won the race.听

Tyann Mintz ended up the surprise winner. She methodically sawed away at her pole, which finally teetered and hit the blue marker dead on.听

鈥淪he was the last tree to go down,鈥 show chair John Hurford said. 鈥淪he hit the peg.鈥

Just as importantly, her stump was judged to be correct.听

Show chair John Hurford said the tree falling event this year was full of lots of firsts. It was the first time a woman qualified to get into the draw to bring down the trees.听

It was also the first time that, outside of the winner, no one hit the target, at least cleanly, and all were disqualified. None of the others that finished in the money, after not being disqualified, actually hit the target.

The problem was that everyone that did hit the target and did so faster than Hintz was disqualified because of the cut of the stump.听

鈥淭yann did everything but just did it slow,鈥 Hurford said. 鈥淚t is a tough event. It takes a long time to set.鈥

Perhaps the most heart-stopping moment was an unintended one that could have turned ugly. Not once but twice in the tree-topping event, Julian Welp of Power River, B.C., almost fell out of his safety belt, at which point Hurford had to signal him to stop as he was disqualified.

For the open show on Sunday, the following individuals and pairs won:

Underhand chop: Lukas Brown-John; axe throw: Karl Bischoff; single bucking: Mark Bouquin; speed bucking: Kevin Steward; Jill & Jill hand bucking: Allison Briscoe and Anita Jezowski; birling: Lukas Brown-John; springboard chop world championship: Jesse Whitehead; chokerman鈥檚 race: Brian Bartow; obstacle pole bucking: Brian Bartow; double hand bucking: Derek Pouchnik and Brander Sirguy; tree topping: Brian Bartow; open climb: Brian Bartow; standing butcher block chop world championship: Kevin Steward; tree falling: Tyann Hintz; ladies single buck: Allison Briscoe; ladies axe throw: Allison Briscoe; ladies鈥 chokerman鈥檚 race: Jamie-Lyn Horth.

The weekend, as a whole, offered up a full slate of social and sporting events, with Friday night set aside for the chair-carving competition, which featured many of the loggers sports competitors and others like Britannia Beach resident Ryan Cook, star of HGTV鈥檚 Carver Kings.听

Later, Cleveland Avenue was transformed into a racecourse of sorts for the bed races, as 14 teams raced through a gauntlet of logging-related obstacles. 麻豆社国产Fire Rescue one, followed by Greg Gardner GM and Thunderbirds, the Scouts Canada team. BC Parks鈥 Smooth Operators won for best costumes.

Saturday followed with the kids鈥 festival, the novice and intermediate loggers sports show and, finally, the axe-throwing competition in the parking lot near Match Eatery and Public House. In that, Derek Pouchnik held off Bartow in the final.听

Along with the open loggers sports show, Sunday featured the eight-kilometre race and the festival parade, while Monday gave way to the Picnic at the Pavilion as a wind-down.
