Snow finally arrived last week at Whistler Olympic Park (WOP) and that meant the first B.C. Cup biathlon event of the season could finally move ahead.
Originally scheduled for Dec. 14 and 15, the event moved to Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 11 and 12) and featured strong showings from a number of Callaghan Winter Sports Club (CWSC) members.
Saturday saw sprint competitors hit the trails and CWSC racers with top three finishes included: Raphael Gasc (Third: Midget 1.5 km), Sorsha Henning (Third: Junior Girls - 4.5 km), Andrew Benson (First: Recreational 4.5 km), Richard Blanchet (Third: Masters Men - 6 km), Matthew Carter (Second: Recreational 6 km) and Hunter Sones (Third: Senior Boys 6 km).
Action continued on Sunday with mass start races. CWSC top-three finishers included Gasc (First: Midget 2 km), Henning (Second: Junior Girls 6 km), Sones (First: Youth Men 10 km) and Carter (Second: Recreational 7.5 km).
The first BC Cup event is the first of several events coming to WOP this month.
The second Coast Cup cross-country ski race of the season goes down on Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 18 and 19). Saturday's race kicks off at noon and features classic technique and individual starts. Sunday's event gets going at 10 a.m. and features free technique and team sprints.
Another event this month is the first biathlon series race the season on Jan. 26. No previous biathlon experience is required and races can choose three laps of 500 metres, 900 metres or two kilometres.
