Boys in red win annual Guns and Hoses game

Fire Rescue Services defeat 麻豆社国产RCMP 5-4 for the victory

Score one for the boys in red.

The 麻豆社国产Fire Rescue Services team managed to secure a 5-4 victory over the 麻豆社国产RCMP on Friday (March 23), ending a two-year winning streak from the police.

The RCMP won 11-7 at last year's game but Fire Rescues Services goalie Grant Murray shut the door, cutting his goals against by seven at this year's game.

It was a good game for us and it feels great, he said. It's sweet revenge for last year where there were a few questionable penalty calls.

Murray noted there may have been an on-ice incident involving handcuffs last year but said the bottom line with the event is helping out a family in need.

It's great to be able to help someone who needs it out and there's always a good turnout, he said of the packed house at Brennan Park Arena. It feels great to see our efforts help someone out and that's the main reason why we have this game.

RCMP representative Todd Pope saw things a little differently.

We let them win this year, he joked. We won two in a row, we can't win every year.

Brad Cameron and Roy Ramage scored two goals apiece, with Andrew Gillis adding one. Shean Kidd, Michelle Onysko and Dave Duplisse (2) scored for the RCMP.

This year's beneficiary is the Lazaridis family's young son Theo, who was diagnosed with leukemia this past holiday season. Check the print edition for more on this story and the final fundraising totals from the event.
