One of the wildest weekends of the year in Britannia Beach is back.

The eighth annual Britannia Classic returns to the windy hills of Squamish鈥檚 southern neighbour from May 22 to 24.

The international longboarding competition regularly draws hundreds of the top riders in the world, and the streets in the upper hills of Britannia Beach are usually lined with close to 1,000 cheering spectators.

Event organizers encourage people of all ages to come check out the free family friendly event. It all kicks off on May 22 with a free ride for all competitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed up by a barbecue at Brennan Park campgrounds for volunteers and racers.

Action continues on May 23 with more free riding from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by practice race runs for one hour and then qualifying races for the big race.

Spectator day is the same day, and it features racers in the U13, U17, 30 plus, women鈥檚 and open divisions. Competitive races are scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. with final races occurring at 4 p.m. Organizers note that the schedule is subject to change.

Winners not only receive bragging rights but there is also approximately $5,000 in total up for grabs to be spread out amongst all the winners and top finishers.

The Britannia course is regarded as one of the fastest around and features three massive hairpin turns and five corners; riders can reach speeds of up to 90 kilometres per hour.
