Cannons continue winning ways

Local baseball team wins Langley tournament, looks forward to home opener

The Howe Sound Cannons continued their winning ways, dominating the Twin Cities Invitational in Langley this past long weekend.

According to Cannons first baseman Tyler Magee, the team was firing on all cylinders.

"We won the tournament, winning four games in a row against seven other Lower Mainland teams," he said. "Everyone made the team curfew of 6 a.m. as cabs were pre-ordered and waiting to return players safely from the farm in Langley."

Jerry Galley was named the tournament's most valuable player, pitching two almost flawless games and also hitting a grand slam. "The Cannons scored so many runs this weekend the scorekeeper's pen kept running out of ink," Magee said.

The Cannons kicked off the tournament with an 8-2 drubbing of the Maple Ridge Jerks on Saturday (May 21) and followed that with two wins on Sunday (May 22), beating the Ridge Meadows Royals 10-8 and upending the Richmond A's 8-3. The three consecutive wins put the Cannons into the tournament final against the Aldergrove Cubs, which took place on Monday (May 23). The Cannons again emerged victorious, winning 7-3 to capture the tournament championship.

"The trophy we won looks like it came with a happy meal, but all is good as we won five brown ones [$500] as well," Magee said.

The Cannons also wanted to get the word out that the team will be having its home opener on Saturday (May 28). The team, which competes in the North Shore Men's Baseball Association, has a record of two wins and zero losses and will see the local club do battle with the also undefeated Moose. The doubleheader is scheduled to kick off at Laroy Watt field at noon and 3 p.m.

"It would be nice to get more than four fans out to watch," Magee said. "And there will be a post-game barbecue and Bigg Rigg Smith will be doing an autograph signing between games."
