The Howe Sound Cannons started the 2014 campaign with a pair of wins over the Vancouver Cardinals on opening day of the North Shore Men鈥檚 Baseball Association (NSMBA) at Laroy Watt field on Saturday (May 3).听

New manager Alex Wishy put himself on the mound to start the game, but the Cardinals got on the board first with a solo home run in the first inning. Troy Morphy responded in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot and Wishy cruised for the rest of his five innings of work, fanning five batters.

Jeremy 鈥淏ig Cat鈥 Galley took over for Wishy in the sixth and the Cannons added five more runs over the final two innings to pick up a 7-1 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Morphy was the player of the game for the Cannons, going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in four runs.听

Game 2 saw Howe Sound start off hot, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and Galley started on the mound and controlled the game through the first four innings. The Cannons added three runs in the bottom of the fourth but Galley struggled in the top of the fifth and the Cardinals made it a 5-4 game.

Brent Dunsford and Wishy chipped in with run-scoring singles to extend the lead and pitcher Kevin 鈥淓nter Sandman鈥 Smilie allowed one run and struck out two in the final two innings to earn his first career save. Jacky 鈥淏oy鈥 Thompson, fresh off a winter of professional ball in Australia, lead the offence for Howe Sound, going 3 for 4.

Next up for the Cannons is a date with the Brewers in North Vancouver on Saturday (May 10). The next home game for the team is June 7 when the Brewers travel to Squamish.听
