Cannons prepare for midseason tourney

Local team has won five of last six

The Howe Sound Cannons' five-game winning streak came to an end last week.

The Cannons dropped a 7-3 decision to the Pirates in North Vancouver on June 29, to move their record to seven wins and three losses in 2011. The team sits in second place in the North Shore Men's Baseball Association (NSMBA) as the league nears the midway point of the season.

"Errors were the demise in this game as we had to recruit a couple pick-ups for this game," said Cannons first baseman Tyler Magee. "Brad 'Bigg Rigg' Smith was there for us, though, in full form and Alex Wishnicki was solid, smashing a couple of nice hits."

The Cannons took on the Reds on Tuesday (July 5) but results were not available by press time.

Next up for the team will be the annual midseason open tournament at Interriver Park in North Vancouver on Saturday and Sunday (July 9 and 10).

"We have won this tournament the past three years in a row and are looking to four-peat," Magee said. "And with those three wins we have won combined 18 brown ones ($1,800) for our efforts."

Participating in this year's tournament with the Cannons are NSMBA teams the Reds and the Moose, along with the Victoria Royals. Games start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and continue on Sunday, with the finals getting underway on Sunday afternoon.

The Cannons' next home game is scheduled to take place on July 16, when the Brewers come to Laroy Watt Field for a doubleheader starting at noon.
