Close to 250 swimmers invaded the Brennan Park pool for the 麻豆社国产Pirates swim meet on Sunday (May 27).
Swimmers from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island battled it out with the Pirates, with several local swimmers posting impressive results.
"All the Pirates swimmers gave top-notch efforts at the meet with many personal bests and podium finishes," said event manager Lynn Chappell. "Ten meet records were broken yesterday, including two by Pirate swimmers, speaking strongly to the rising talent."
Pirates who managed to break records included Wyatt Pedersen in the Division 6 Boys 50-metre freestyle and Eli Chappell, who broke a meet record in the Division 4 Boys 200 individual medley. Pedersen broke a record that had stood since 1997, while Chappell broke a mark that was established in 1998.
The Pirates' new coach Daniel Russell was impressed with what he saw out of his new team.
"The 麻豆社国产meet gave me a chance to see all the kids perform and achieve best times and meet records by the Pirates and other teams," he said. "The Pirates are a great bunch of kids who want to do well, and even if they don't, they keep on trying. For the summer, I'm looking forward to seeing lots of improvements, best times and more Pirates moving onto the provincial championships."
Coach Alex Wuolle, who will leave the team next month to continue his studies at UBC, said it was a good showing by the team.
"The meet turned out well with lots of best times and the kids stepped it up and displayed good sportsmanship," he said. "The meet showed the kids the hard work and improvements over the weeks. It also showed the coaches where there are opportunities to work with them to improve their best times and help them achieve their goals."
Chappell said everyone was pleased with the efforts of the new Pirates and thanked the many parent volunteers who helped the event run smoothly.
Pirates who placed on the podium included: Sarah Dale (Division 6: first in 100 breaststroke, third in 50 freestyle and third in 50 butterfly), Wyatt Pedersen (Division 6: first in 50 freestyle, first in 100 freestyle and second in 100 breaststroke), Eli Chappell (Division 4: first in 100 breaststroke, first in 100 backstroke, first in 200 individual medley, first in 50 freestyle, first in 100 freestyle and first in 50 butterfly), Mikayla Lorimer (Division 3: first in 100 individual medley, first in 50 backstroke, first in 100 freestyle, second in 50 freestyle, second in 50 butterfly and third in 50 breaststroke) and KJ Kimura (Division 5: second in 100 freestyle, third in 100 breaststroke and third in 50 butterfly).
