Chawanda paddles to top-10 finish

麻豆社国产dragon boat team posts strong showing at women's regatta

The waters of False Creek were kind to Team Chawanda on Saturday (May 25).

The 麻豆社国产Dragon Boat Association (SDBA) representatives participated in the 16th annual Women's Dragon Boat Regatta and managed a 10th-place finish competing against 49 teams from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

Teams raced on the 500-metre course and Team Chawanda improved its time in all three races, according to team spokesperson Cathie Greenlees.

"We paddled three 500-metre races and progressively improved our time in each race - winning our second heat and placing 10th overall," Greenlees said in an email."It's great to see all of our training come together on the race course. And we would like to thank our coaches Carl Mendoza and Macky Sumalileng for all of their work with us."

Greenlees said a nice moment occurred when eight teams made up entirely of breast cancer survivors raced against each other. After the race, a ceremony was held to honour those impacted by breast cancer.

Team Chawanda will return to False Creek for the Alcan Rio Tinto International June 21 to 23. Greenlees said the team is still accepting new paddlers and to visit the group's Facebook page for more information on how to join the team.
