Chawanda represents at False Creek

麻豆社国产dragon boat team places 14th at Rio Tinto

The 麻豆社国产ladies of the water returned to the Rio Tinto International Dragon Boat Festival Friday through Sunday (June 21 to 23) in False Creek.

Team Chawanda hit the water on Saturday (June 22) and took home second place in their qualifying heat with a time of two minutes, 27.2 seconds. With the time and placing, Chawanda advanced to the Competitive/Recreational A division race on Sunday (June 23).

Day 2 of competition saw Chawanda place sixth in the Recreational A division race with a time of 2:24.8. The time slotted them into 14th place out of a field of 40 teams in the division.

Chawanda head coach Carl Mendoza said despite hoping to place higher, he was proud of what the team accomplished considering the strong competition at the festival.

The 25th annual festival saw 210 teams from all over North America hit the waters in front of an estimated 100,000 spectators throughout the weekend. All teams raced a 500-metre course with some teams competing in some of the many specialty races over the weekend.

Team Chawanda's next race will occur at the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival on July 5 to 7. Team officials said they're still looking for dedicated and hard working women to join the team.
