Local athletes excel at 18th annual event

Top local male Jaroslav Ploc and top local female Zoe Dawson celebrate their wins.

The overall numbers were down but that didn’t stop a handful of Â鶹Éç¹ú²úresidents from posting strong results at the 18th annual Â鶹Éç¹ú²úTriathlon on Sunday (July 12).

For the first time since 2012, a Â鶹Éç¹ú²úwoman was tops among all females in the Olympic distance division. Zoe Dawson continued her summer of excellence by posting a time of 2:11:17.

Dawson was second after the swim but then dominated on the bike before maintaining her lead on the run. She was also the top female at the Sea to Sky Scramble race on June 27 and won the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úMountain Women title after her showing in the Scramble was combined with a good showing at the Test of Metal.

She also won the female division at the Shannon Basin Trail Run on June 13 and placed fourth at the Orecrusher bike race in May.

The Olympic distance men’s division saw a repeat winner, as Chilliwack’s Robert Johnson won his second straight title. He shaved 55 seconds off his 2014 time, completing the course in 1:53:43. He edged out Vancouver’s Jeff Manson and Vancouver’s Carsten Lapointe in the win.

Right behind the top three was Squamish’s Jasoslav Ploc, who placed fourth with a time of 2:02:27. Ploc excelled on the run portion, posting the third fastest time of all competitors.

Olympic numbers were down to 130 this year from 184 in 2014.Ìý

Â鶹Éç¹ú²úresidents fared well in the race. Local triathletes in the top 50 included: Jasoslav Ploc (4th), Zoe Dawson (12th), Andrew Clegg (16th), Richard Avedon-Savage (20th), Brandi Heisterman (27th), Louise Kemble (32nd) and Simon Crevier (44th).Ìý

Sprint numbers also took a bit of a slide, down to 109 after 131 participated last year. Vancouver’s Stan Lorenzo had the top time, finishing up in 1:09:54. Lorenzo was fifth coming out of the swim but then was the fastest in both the bike and run.

He beat Surrey’s Brett Armstrong (1:13:32) and top woman Megan MacDonald from Pitt Meadows to win the crown.

Just like in the Olympic distance, several local athletes had solid showings in the sprint distance. Simon Jongsma was the top local male and won the male 20-24 division. He posted a time of 1:17:58 and finished seventh overall.

Laura Noaro has the top time for local females, completing the sprint course in 1:30:21. Other locals in the top 50 included: Rory Strickland (14th), Kyle Stainton (20th) and Patrick Stafford-Smith (30th).

Relay participation increased for 2015, with 37 teams of three – up from 30 in 2014.

The Program Busters, comprised of Garibaldi Highlands residents Kevin Pickard, Martin Caron and Colin Geddes, were tops amongst all relay squads with a time of 2:00:13.

Electric Toenail (Â鶹Éç¹ú²úresidents Stephen Todd, Rob Phoenix and Caroline Walter) had the fastest time for all mixed teams, completing the course in 2:11:01.

The best all-female team was Squamish’s Linnea Uunila, Michaela Hoskin and Elly Hoskin. All three youngsters are veterans of the Â鶹Éç¹ú²úYouth Triathlon and that experience paid off, with the trio finishing in 2:34:29.Ìý
