Weather put a damper into the first day of racing at the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Championships in 麻豆社国产on Monday (Aug. 31).
Heavy rains and light winds led to the cancellation of all silver and green fleet races, with only a few gold races occurring earlier in the morning. The final decision to cancel the day鈥檚 races was made at 2 p.m.
Event co-chair Garry Cotter said training leading up to the first day of racing went smoothly, as did the opening ceremonies on Sunday. Dancers from the 麻豆社国产Nation welcomed the nearly 100 sailors from across the continent during the ceremonies, and there was also food and drink to celebrate the occasion.
It鈥檚 the first time the event has ever been held in Squamish.
Solo racing continued on Tuesday, with team racing occurring on Wednesday. The event continues with two more days of racing Thursday and Friday, which will conclude the event. Awards and a closing ceremony will also take place on Friday. All racing days are free for the public to attend.
麻豆社国产sailors Ben Sweeny, Grayson Blain and Adreian Conn are competing in the silver fleet at the event and Lynette Conn is racing in the green fleet. They are representing the North Shore Sailing Team and the West Vancouver Yacht Club.
