Don Ross Middle School was crowned with the provincial championship win after earning the most points between all schools at a recent mountain biking competition.
On May 24, Don Ross Middle School and Coast Mountain Academy co-hosted the 2019 BC High School Mountain Bike Championships at Alice Lake Provincial Park.
During that event, Don Ross put on a number of podium-worthy performances with its Grade 8 and 9 athletes. Coast Mountain Academy, Whistler Secondary, Pemberton Secondary and Howe Sound Secondary all put on Top 3 results as well.
One of the big highlights was the combined award for the top finisher each category in both the XC and Enduro races.
This is called the King or Queen of the Mountain, and it was awarded to several local athletes: Marin Lowe (Female Grade 8 DRMS), Jasper Fleming (Male Grade 8 DRMS), Elly Hoskin (Female Grade 9 DRMS), Coen Skrypnek (Male Grade 9 DRMS), Sienna Dickson (Female Grade 10 HSS), Haydyn Wynter (Male Grade 10 CMA), Ian Milley (Male Grade 11/12 CMA).
Almost 400 athletes between Grades 8 and 12 representing more than 40 schools across the province gathered at 8:30 a.m. at Alice Lake South Beach for the start of the Cross-Country (XC) course.
Riders started in waves by grade-level about 15 minutes apart and rode a course that included local trademark trails such as the Corners, Manboobs, Leave of Absence, Roller Coaster and Lumberjacks before returning to the park via Jack鈥檚 Trail.
Senior riders had a slightly longer course than Juniors 鈥� all athletes were finished within an hour and a half.聽
At 12:30 p.m., a two and three-stage Enduro series began with combined times determining the overall winners.
