DRSS dominates local circuit

Grade 8/9 teams clean up at North Shore competition

The Don Ross Secondary School (DRSS) mountain bike team cleaned up at the final race of the North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association's (NSSSAA) mountain bike race series in North Vancouver on May 15.

The series, which pits Grade 8 and 9 male and female riders against each other, saw DRSS win first place in three of the four team divisions. DRSS took bragging rights in the Grade 8 and 9 boys and the Grade 8 girls team categories.

In addition to the team wins, DRSS students Kasper Woolley and Sean Fincham took home the top overall Grade 8 and Grade 9 boys title, respectively.

The DRSS team was comprised of: Woolley, Fincham, Nolan Heikoop, Calista Ryan, Cameron Larson, Kei Grey, Chloe Moberg, Isaac Howell, Parker Mell, Michael Kilby, Matthew Misquita, Hunter Verner, Tobin Hubner and Kevin Ranada. The squad was coached by Oliver Gendron.

The next big race for the team will be the Provincial Championships in Port Moody on Saturday (May 25).

In other local cycling news, Squamish's Miranda Miller continued her strong 2013 season with a first-place finish in the senior elite women's division at the first Canada Cup downhill race of the season in Mont-Tremblant, Que., on Sunday (May 19).

Miller beat the second-place rider by an impressive 22 seconds in the win. Squamish's Lee Jackson also had a good showing, placing second in the junior expert men division.

Squamish's Rhys Verner also had a good weekend, placing third in the junior expert men's division at Race 3 of the Northwest Cup in Port Angeles, Wash. on Sunday.
