The Ellis Moving Eagles remained atop the Howe Sound Men's Soccer League (HSMSL) after Week 6 action, but there's a logjam in second place.
The Eagles played Sikh Temple to a 3-3 draw on Sunday (Oct. 13). Eagles coach Dan Ellis said his squad was playing from behind most of the game, but showed some resiliency to fight back.
It was quite the battle out there today, he said. We gave up two early goals and I guess we just didn't wake up off the bell. But after that we started to go into battle mode and pick away at the lead.
Ellis said his team's possession got better as the game progressed, the midfield held strong and the Eagles eventually tied the game. However, minutes later Temple regained the lead and went up 3-2 in the second half, but then the Eagles' Nathan Ward scored a goal from an incredible angle to tie the game at three apiece.
That was threading the needle, Ellis said, with a smile.
He said new talent from Whistler has helped the Eagles vault to first place in the league.
We have had a transfusion of Whistler talent, he said. We recruited five guys from Whistler that play in the summer league out there and decided to join us in the fall. It's really solidified our midfield and given us strength throughout our lineup. We've been fielding a pretty strong team.
Ward, Connor Richards and Matt Rollinson scored for the Eagles, with Gurpreet Rai scoring a pair and Mohammed Habib replying for Temple.
The Eagles improved to four wins and one tie, with Temple sitting in second place with three wins, two losses and one tie.
Temple has some company in the battle for second place after Galileo defeated B&B Excavating 5-2 in Sunday's other game.
Alex Fernandez scored a hat trick, with Adrian Oreamuno and Devon Turner also adding goals for Galileo. Gary O'Neil scored both of B&B's goals. The game featured a total of five cards handed out, including two reds.
Galileo's record improved to three wins and three losses, while B&B fell to three wins and two losses.
Week 7 HSMSL action will feature the Eagles taking on B&B and Ocean Sun battling Galileo. For more information on the league, visit www.howesoundmens.snappages.com.
