It was a week of highs and lows for the 麻豆社国产Eagles juvenile hockey club.
The Eagles posted a 4-3 win in North Delta on Thursday (Jan. 15), only to lose by the same score at home to the Cloverdale Colts on Saturday (Jan. 17).
麻豆社国产received seven power plays, only scoring once while allowing the Colts to score twice a man down. Eagles head coach Matthew Carrat said Cloverdale鈥檚 winning goal, scored shorthanded was a heartbreaker for his team.
鈥淲e had a lack of pressure and sat back and they scored 鈥� it was a big mistake for us,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e have to be two men on the puck when we have an extra man, we have to be all over them and we weren鈥檛.鈥�
Cloverdale opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game but Squamish鈥檚 Ryan Fraser tied the game up three minutes later after being set up by Terry Clark. Cloverdale added a power play goal with less than two minutes left in the first to skate away with a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes.
The Colts made it a two goal lead just 90 seconds into the second period with the first of two shorthanded goals but Squamish鈥檚 Brendan Hopkins made it a one-goal game again. The backbreaking fourth Colts goal was also scored shorthanded to make it a 4-2 game after two periods.
Squamish鈥檚 Kyle Luca scored a power play goal in the third to draw within one, with Mitchell Hayden and Karmen Mooney drawing the assists, but it wasn鈥檛 enough and 麻豆社国产lost 4-3.
Carrat gave full credit to the Colts for the win.
鈥淚t was a hard fought battle but praise to Cloverdale 鈥� they really came to play today,鈥� he said. 鈥淭heir goalie was a hot goalie today and he made some really big saves for them, especially in the first period.鈥�
The win over North Delta solidified 麻豆社国产in second place and Carrat said that victory was one to remember.
鈥淭hat was huge for us,鈥� he said, noting that North Delta is the top team in the league. 鈥淚t was probably the biggest win I鈥檝e ever been a part of and was a big character win for us.鈥�
Squamish鈥檚 record moves to 11 wins and four losses after the pair of games and there are two games remaining in the regular season. The Eagles are home on Thursday (Jan. 22) and then travel to Port Coquitlam on Saturday (Jan. 24) to close out the season.
Playoff details still need to be ironed out but Carrat pointed out that his team should have a high seed heading into the postseason.
