The Ellis Moving Eagles never gave up against Galileo on Sunday (March 3) and their determination helped them clinch second place in the Howe Sound Men鈥檚 Soccer League (HSMSL).
Ellis had a 1-0 lead after the first half but Galileo fought back and took 2-1 and 3-2 leads, with all three goals being scored on penalty kicks. But the Eagles didn鈥檛 quit and connected on a header late in the second half to take back the lead and win 4-3.
Alexis Fernandez converted on all three penalty kicks for Galileo, with Paul Park Baxter, Jamie Kawchuck, James Girard and John Goodwin scoring for the Eagles.
It turned out to be a big win for the Eagles, who leapfrogged Sikh Temple to secure second place in the HSMSL. The Eagles finished with seven wins, three losses and three ties on the season after also defeating Ocean Sun 3-0 on March 26.
Galileo dropped to five wins, seven losses and one tie and was set to play Ocean Sun on Wednesday (April 2) for the right to continue to the next round of the playoffs on Sunday (April 6). Results of that game were unavailable at press time.
The winner of Wednesday鈥檚 game will take on B&B on Sunday, with the Eagles battling Sikh Temple. The two winners from Sunday鈥檚 games will then meet for the HSMSL championship on April 12.
In other HSMSL news, Gurpreet Rai of Sikh Temple won the league鈥檚 golden boot as the top goal scorer. Rai had 16 goals in Temple鈥檚 13 games and Temple was the highest scoring team for the season with 54 goals. The Eagles were the top team defensively, allowing only 18 goals in 13 games.
