Eagles edge Richmond Bears

Rugby League squad wins first road game of season

Two weeks into the British Columbia Rugby League (BCRL) season and the Sea to Sky Eagles have yet to taste defeat.

The Eagles travelled to Richmond on Saturday (June 8) and picked up a 28-19 win over the Bears.

Just like last week, Ally Mac was the hero for the Eagles.

With the Eagles losing 19-18 with 10 minutes to go, Mac scored a crucial try to turn the game around. But he wasn't finished, as the Bears came straight back and looked certain to score until Mac intercepted 10 metres out to snuff out any Richmond hopes of victory.

The Eagles raced out to a 14-0 lead early on but the Bears clawed back, eventually taking the lead late into the second half. Scoring tries for the Eagles were: Adam Misios, Matty Upton, Harvey Bell and Mac.

Eagles head coach Keith Reeves said the players battled travel issues but once they got on the field, they persevered.

"It could have been a disaster; our preparation was awful," he said. "The directions to the ground in Richmond were terrible - at one time we had four cars adrift south of Vancouver somewhere. We forgot the kit, started late, had to get changed at halftime, in fact we did everything wrong we could have done. But the disaster was averted, some of our touches were sublime and two or three of the tries were spectacular - I think class told in the end."

The Eagles will next take on the Kelowna Crows on Saturday (June 15) at Klahanie Park in North Vancouver. The teams will hit the field at 1:30 p.m.
