The Sea to Sky Eagles rugby league squad completed a perfect season on Saturday (June 15).
With a 70-6 win over the Vancouver Dragons on Friday (June 14) and a 44-16 triumph over the Kelowna Crows on Saturday (June 15), the Eagles improved to four wins and no losses on the season and qualified for the British Columbia Rugby League's (BCRL) Grand Final game in July.
Eagles head coach Keith Reeves said it was a good weekend for his team.
"It was important to get the Vancouver game out of the way, otherwise it could have been rescheduled just before the playoffs in July," he said. "I knew we had the depth of squad to get us maximum points. I am delighted in the way we played and there were some fantastic individual performances."
Hooker Harvey Bell picked up 24 points against Vancouver on Friday and Howe Sound Secondary School (HSSS) students Josh Watts and Pablo Garcia also played big roles against the Dragons. Garcia picked up a try on both Friday and Saturday.
Other scorers against the Dragons were Ally Mac, Reece Aitken, Ryan Hunt and Ricky Griffiths, who touched all down twice, skipper Matt Upton, who got a try and six conversions and Markus Keinhorst and Adam Misios, who had a try apiece.
The game on Saturday was a tougher one for the Eagles and most of the scoring came in a 15-minute stretch before halftime. The Eagles built a 38-6 lead at the half.
"Our guys were absolutely running on empty in the second half of the second game," Reeves said. "By then we'd picked up a few injuries and it took a massive defensive effort to see us home."
Josh Geitz rounded off two outstanding displays with the final try of the game. Other scorers were Hunt, Garcia, Bell (two), Ben Baggott, Darren Booth and Upton, who landed five conversions.
The Eagles square off with the second-place Surrey Beavers for the BCRL championship on July 6. The location of the final is still to be determined. The two teams met in 麻豆社国产on June 1, with the Eagles picking up a narrow 12-10 win. The Beavers finished the BCRL regular season with a record of three wins and one loss.
