A nearly perfect season ended in disappointment for the Sea to Sky Eagles rugby league football club on Saturday (July 6).
The Eagles, playing in the British Columbia Rugby League (BCRL) final in North Vancouver, took on the Surrey Beavers and a combination of mistakes and lack of discipline led to the team's 21-10 defeat.
"We couldn't match Surrey's physicality," said Eagles head coach Keith Reeves. "We turned the ball over too often under intense intimidation and the Beavers were too strong for us. On the few occasions we were allowed to play we showed great skill - but skill was never going to win this game."
The Beavers and the Eagles battled in the heat in the first half, with Surrey managing to get on the board with a try to hold a 6-0 lead after the first half. The second half saw Surrey put the pressure on, building to a 14-0 lead and the Beavers never looked back.
Ben Baggott was the Eagles' man of the match, scoring two tries with Billy Shearer adding the conversion to get the Eagles on the board. The Beavers added a late try and a field goal for a little insurance to reach the 21-10 final score.
The final wraps up the second BCRL season and the Eagles plan to return to the pitch to continue their quest for gold next May.
