Eagles kicking off BCRL season

Home opener set for Saturday; Sounders wrap up year

It's time for the Sea to Sky Eagles rugby league to return to the pitch in Squamish.

The British Columbia Rugby League (BCRL) team will make its 2013 home debut on Saturday (June 1) when it hosts the defending champion Surrey Beavers at 2:30 p.m. at the Howe Sound Secondary School field.

"This should be a great game," said Eagles head coach Keith Reeves. "Surrey have merged with Bayside so they should be a really strong outfit this year. I'm expecting us to push them all the way in what should be a tough but close encounter."

Reeves said he's expecting an improved Eagles team for 2013.

"We've got a really strong squad this year, having recruited some top Aussies who've been playing pro back home," he said. "We've also pulled in a whole host of Canadian guys to beef it up and I think we've got a good balance."

He said the Eagles will be missing several players who suffered injuries from the International 9's tournament in 麻豆社国产earlier this month but pointed out that local talents Pablo Garcia and Josh Watts will be in the lineup.

In other local rugby news, the Howe Sound Sounders rugby club posted its second win with a 57-14 triumph over Chatelech Secondary on Friday (May 24).

Rolan Mendoza led the way with three tries, with Kevin Newman adding five conversions. Also scoring tries were Garcia, Watts, Gordon Borchert, Patrick Wunderich and Rick Wilson. For his efforts, Wilson was named the man of the match.

The Sounders will conclude the season with an alumni/intra-squad/invitational game on Thursday (May 30) at 5 p.m. The game will feature the 2013 team taking on alumni from Howe Sound and Whistler secondary schools.
