The 麻豆社国产Eagles juvenile hockey club skated away with a 5-1 win on Saturday, Jan. 10, but head coach Matthew Carrat pointed out it could have been more.

With six minutes to go and the Eagles up 3-1 over Surrey, a Surrey player ran into Eagles goalie Mason Beauregard and the pair of fights that followed cost 麻豆社国产its sportsmanship point 鈥 a point the club needs to climb the standings.

鈥淚t was a great game all the way up until the six-minute mark,鈥 Carrat said. 鈥淚 understand why one of our players was defending our goalie, but there was already a penalty on it and we shouldn鈥檛 have fought.鈥

Carrat explained that teams receive two points for a win and can pick up an additional point for 22 penalty minutes or under. The Eagles were under that mark for the game, but any major penalty, such as fighting, means no sportsmanship point is awarded.

鈥淲e don鈥檛 want to be known for that [fighting],鈥 he said. 鈥淲e need our sportsmanship points and that fight lost it for us and we have suspensions from it now too.鈥

Despite the lack of sportsmanship, Carrat said it was a good effort from his team.

鈥淭he win was fantastic and the team played well together today,鈥 he said.

麻豆社国产fell behind 1-0 at the 6:30 mark but tied the game up four minutes later when Isshin Chiyasu scored on a nice individual effort. Kyle Luca and Graham Raschella drew assists on the tying goal.

The Eagles took over in the second period when Terry Clark scored a power play goal with helpers from Luca and Chiyasu. Ninety seconds later Mitchell Hayden added some insurance with Nick Lowe and Karmen Mooney picking up the assists.

Chiyasu added his second goal in the third period with assists from Mooney and Shawn Gerhardt and Clark picked up his second with assists from Ryan Milia and Gerhardt to make it a 5-1 final.

The win is the second victory in 2015 for the Eagles, after posting a 5-1 win in North Vancouver on Jan. 6. Beauregard was unavailable for the game and affiliate goalie Kirill Ransom was called up and 鈥 according to Eagles assistant coach Troy Hall-Leroux 鈥 played tremendous in a 5-1 win.

Squamish鈥檚 record now sits at 10 wins and three losses on the season, and the team sits in second place but are ready for a first-place battle against North Delta in North Delta today (Jan. 15).

The Eagles return for their regular home game at Brennan Park on Saturday (Jan. 17) at 7 p.m.
